Corkscrews
Importance of Corkscrews - Believe it or not, corkscrews can be unique collectible household items. The best corkscrew has a round wire with five turns, which comes to a point at the tip. (see picture below) Make sure the corkscrew has a large gripping handle. The best type of corkscrew to have at home is referred to as the “waiters corkscew.” Picture ordering an expensive bottle of wine at a restaurant and how the waiter shows the wine before it is opened. Take notice of the type of corkscrew being used with all of the neat gadgets attached. This type of corkscrew has a knife at the end that is used to cut foil to expose the cork. Once the cork is exposed, use the turn screw, then hook the lever extension onto the lip of the bottle by gripping the handle and pulling upward until the cork is out and intact.
Waiters Corkscrew
There is an expensive corkscrew that is made in France called Chateau Laguiole. If you are looking to spend money on a good corkscrew, this model comes in natural, horn, and stainless steel. There are many other corkscrews, but they appear more complicated than recommended when trying to pry open a bottle of wine. The types of corkscrews to steer away from are ones made from a single piece of metal with flanges that encircle in a spiral pattern. This variety has two handles that rise as wings as the metal is screwed into the cork. The end result will leave you with a shredded cork.
