Wine With Dessert or Wine as Dessert

All dessert wines have one thing in common: sweetness. Hence the name "dessert" wines. Their sweetness closes your palate and makes you feel satisfied after a good meal. For serving dessert wine at home, half bottles are recommended because a full bottle isn't practical unless a lot of people are sharing. Instead of serving dessert, some prefer to serve dessert wine. A glass of dessert wine can give you the satisfying sweetness of dessert with a lot less bulk and zero fat!

Favororable wine and dessert combinations:

Port - dark chocolate desserts, walnuts, poached pears
Madeira - milk chocolate, nut tarts, creme caramel, coffee or mocha flavored
Pedro Ximenez Sherry - vanilla ice cream (with wine poured over), raisin-nut cakes, desserts with figs or dried fruits
Sauternes - fruit tarts, poached fruits, creme brulee, caramel and hazelnut desserts
Beerenauslese and Late Harvet Riesling - fruit tarts, almond cookies, creme brulee
Asti Spumante - fresh fruits, biscotti
Vouvray - fruit tarts, fresh fruits

Dessert Recipes:

Bruschetta with Honey Ricotta and Strawberries:
  • ¾ cup fresh ricotta – about 6 ½ ounces
  • 1 tablespoon honey, plus extra for drizzling
  • 4 slices of raisin or currant bread
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ pint strawberries, sliced
  1. Beat the fresh ricotta with 1 tablespoon honey. Toast the bread and brush the toast with the melted butter. Top with the ricotta.
  2. Garnish the bruschetta with sliced strawberries and drizzle honey over all. Serve immediately.
Wine - Serve this sweet and simple bruschetta for breakfast with coffee or dessert with port wine. Since this recipe is easy, all the ingredients must be topnotch.
