Wine Glasses and Stemware

The enjoyment of food and wine is enhanced by fine glassware, whether you're dining out or and home. Fine glasses that are expertly designed, do enhance fine wines, but glasses like wines have to be adapted to the occasion. Wine glasses that are artfully etched, rose-tinted or green-stemmed might be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but not appropriate for serving fine wine. Glasses that obscure the color of wine detract from the wine itself. At home you can choose glasses that show off the wines color, smell and flavors. The most suitable wine glasses are clear with a bowl large enough for swirling, not ones that are not chunky, cut or colored.

Ten ounces is the perfect size glass for white or red wine. Glasses that hold less than ten ounces are too small. When selecting glasses for home use, go ahead and choose one that matches your personal preference. Large, balloon shaped glasses are more suitable for red wines. Glasses that close in a bit at the top helps to concentrate the color of white wine by keeping it chill. For champagne, the traditional flutes or slender tulip shapes are ideal.

Most wine glasses are extremely fragile and can be easily chipped. It is important to store your stemware in wine glass racks to prevent them from being broken. Wine glass racks allow you to store the stemware upside down with the bowl of the wine glass facing downwards and the base of the glass slides into a holder. A wine glass rack is an attractive way to display your crystal wine glasses and have them ready for use.

Washing Wine Glases

By keeping your finest wine glasses detergent, dust and smell free, they will remain in peak condition. The best way to do this is by putting them in the dishwasher instead of spending hours washing by hand. Put the glasses in the dishwasher by themselves and not with anything grimy. Wash the glasses on the shortest cycle without detergent, if they are not too greasy. If they need detergent, use sparingly. When the cycle ends, immediately open the door so that the glasses do not sit in the humid atmosphere. Use a clean linen cloth to dry. If you prefer to hand wash, follow the same rules - hot water, a small amount of detergent, thorough rinsing and drying. Store glasses in a dust free location and if you haven't used them in a while, you will need to rinse the glass first.
