What You Enjoy Through Wine Tasting
Wine in a nutshell is an alcoholic drink made by fermenting the juice or an infusion of another fruit, a flower, or a vegetable. The point of tasting wine is simply to find wines that you will thoroughly enjoy. There's never a right or wrong way to taste wine. Sight (look), smell (nose), and taste (sip) come together to make wine tasting a delightful experience. To most, tasting wine means taking a sip and swallowing immediately, which isn't the case. Tasting has something to do with taste buds, which you have all over your mouth. Learning how to taste wines will deepen your appreciation for both wines and winemakers and you will be a wine tasting expert in no time.
First you want to start with clear wine glasses. The rim of the glass should bend inwards to help funnel aromas to the nose and allow you to swirl without spilling.
When pouring wine, you typically want less than an inch. If you are the one doing the pouring you don't want to fill the glass too full. By not filling the glass, it makes the tasting process a lot easier.
Tip: Always hold your wine glass by the stem rather than the bowl since the heat of your hand will quickly warm the liquid. If you have a steady hand, you can hold the glass by the base. If the wine is too cold for your liking, a useful tip is to cup your hands around the bowl to quickly raise the temperature of the wine.
If you are tasting several wines, start with the lightest (sparkling, roses, then light whites, followed by full-bodied whites) and progress to heaviest (light reds to more full-bodied reds followed by dessert wines). This will allow your taste buds to be more sensitive so you can appreciate each type of wine. By sipping water in between each tasting, will help preserve your palate.
Wine and Health Benefits
There have been a number of studies done regarding the health benefits of drinking wine. The advantages of drinking wine have been linked to many diseases. These diseases include cardiovascular mortality, stroke incidence, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, peptic ulcers, kidney stones, bone density and quality of life. Wine also is believed to reduce stress and help you think more clearly. A glass or two of wine daily is the recommended amount for reaping the health benefits of drinking wine. Wine contains chemical compounds known as flavonoids, which helps reduce fatty buildups in the arteries. Moderate wine drinking can prolong life while excessive drinking can shorten it. If you are concerned with amount of wine consumption, keep track of the amount of wine that you drink by using a chart method. It is okay to have one or two glasses of wine daily, but don’t overdo it. Believe it or not, women who have one drink a day will live 20% longer than those who do not drink.
